magazines: design, production, art direction, print management, print quoting

Magazines have been the mainstay of my publishing work. From lifestyle magazines like Simply Living, Nature & Health Journal and Australian Geographic to the popular science bi-monthly Newton Graphic Science and the trade publication Mortgage Brief.

From designing the first issue of Australian Geographic in 1985, using layout boards, Letraset and waxed galleys of type,  I oversaw the technical conversion of this iconic publication to the e-world of the digital age in 1989 and the Apple Mac. I remained creative director into the 2000s. AG was the first mainstream publication to be produced wholly electronically and pioneered the use of stochastic screening and CTP (computer to plate) technologies in Australia.

With a subscriber base of over 200,000 members, AG was hugely successful leading to the establishment of The Australian Geographic Society along with a retail chain of over 50 stores throughout Australia. The journal and its related products – books, catalogues, calendars and diaries, etc – were awarded many national and international Print Awards and Awards for Excellence.

Shree Media, a boutique publisher of which I was a partner and art director, produced the quarterly lifestyle magazines Simply Living, Alive & Kicking, and Nature & Health Journal in the 1970s and 80s.

Tony Gordon Printcounsel packaged the bi-monthly trade magazine Mortgage Brief for the Mortgage Industry Association of Australia (MIAA) from 2003-2005. TGP was responsible for the writing, editing, design, ad sales, printing and distribution.

Earlier work included editing the bi-monthly photographic magazine Camera Graphics, designing various Penthouse spin off publications and Forum magazine for publisher Horwitz, and more recently designing and print managing Dick Smith's Magazine of Forbidden Ideas – with a print run and distribution of over 2 million copies.
